How to Choose a Potato Processing Line: A Technical Guide for Packers

A guide for packers mechanizing fresh potato handling: PC 4000 line stages, capacity, sizing, and weighing and packing with Newtec and C-Pack.

If you pack fresh potatoes for supermarkets and grocers, you know the product isn’t sold on variety alone: it’s sold on how it reaches the shelf. Retail potatoes — in bags, nets, or trays — need to be clean of soil, brushed for a uniform appearance, and size-graded.

This guide is for you if you run a regional packer or cooperative and are evaluating mechanization. We’ll walk through the stages of the potato line Albion manufactures, the PC 4000, who it’s designed for, an orientative capacity calculation, and what the brands Albion represents in Argentina offer for weighing and packing.

Why mechanize the process?

The reasons come straight from the process itself:

  1. Continuous flow. Potatoes go in bulk and come out in a weighed bag in a single pass.
  2. Uniform finish. Mechanical brushing delivers the even appearance expected on the shelf.
  3. Consistent grades. The sizer splits the flow into commercial sizes using the same criteria all day long.
  4. Weight control on every bag. The weigher checks the final weight before the bag is closed.
  5. The full circuit in your own plant. From bin to weighed bag, with no packing stages contracted separately.

The line’s stages, step by step

The PC 4000 Line integrates 8 machines in continuous flow. Here’s how potatoes move through it:

1. Receiving and dosing

The Receiving Hopper with Conveyor accepts bulk product from a truck or from bins and doses the flow into the line.

2. Elevation

The Elevator transfers the continuous flow up to the brusher inlet.

3. Brushing

The Brusher removes adhered soil and produces the uniform finish expected on the shelf. Its brushes have adjustable pressure, which makes it compatible with sensitive varieties such as Spunta, Kennebec, Innovator, and similar.

4. Inspection

On the Inspection Conveyor, operators discard green, split, or mechanically damaged potatoes before investing in sizing.

5. Sizing

The Potato Sizer splits the flow into 3 size grades + 1 reject fraction.

6. Distribution, filling, and weighing

The last three stages close the circuit:

  • The Distribution Conveyor routes each grade to its packing station.
  • The Conveyor with Bagging Hopper accumulates product over the bag mouth for filling.
  • The Weigher checks the final weight of every bag before closing.

What the PC 4000 includes and who it’s for

The complete line is those 8 machines, from bin to weighed bag. It runs at 4,000 kg/h in a single continuous pass, with a sanitary design and ready to integrate with downstream packaging systems.

That capacity is designed for regional packers and mid-size cooperatives. On the PC 4000 line page you can see each module individually. And if you need to add a specific machine to an existing installation, the equipment catalog brings together modules available for integration into existing lines or as standalone units.

How to size it: an orientative example

The basic calculation is simple:

Annual capacity = hourly capacity × hours per day × days per year

Let’s assume a standard operation of 8 hours a day, 200 days a year (1,600 hours a year):

  • Per day: 4,000 kg/h × 8 h = 32,000 kg (32 metric tons).
  • Per year: 4,000 kg/h × 1,600 h = 6,400,000 kg (6,400 metric tons).

Read the other way around, the calculation tells you how many line hours you need. If, for example, you pack 2,000 metric tons a year, the PC 4000 processes them in about 500 hours of operation.

Important: this is an orientative calculation based on the published capacity, with operating assumptions that may not match yours. To size your case, send us your volume, your operating schedule, and your packaging formats.

Weighing and packing with Newtec and C-Pack

The PC 4000 already ends in a weighed bag. If you need to go further — bagging by weight at high speed, or presenting potatoes in nets for supermarkets — Albion represents two brands in Argentina that work in that stage. They are made by European manufacturers and distributed by Albion: they are not Albion-made equipment.

Newtec (Denmark): multi-head weighing

Newtec is a Danish manufacturer of weighing, packing, and optical sorting machinery for fruits and vegetables, and its lineup integrates into packing plants for potatoes, carrots, onions, and other horticultural products. Its specialty is multi-head weighers for high-speed weight-based bagging, with consistent precision and minimal product loss; the catalog also includes High Speed Container Fillers, optical sorters, and in-line quality control. It’s the premium option for high-capacity automated lines, and across the region Albion provides installation, technical support, and after-sales service. Albion offers the PC 4000 integrated with Newtec weighers. More details on Newtec.

C-Pack (Germany): net packaging

C-Pack is a family-owned German company, headquartered in Tornesch, with over 50 years manufacturing net-packaging machines: the presentation supermarkets demand for fresh produce. In Argentina, Albion represents its full catalog: the VAC and VAS automatic net packers and the HCL 912 and HS 913 semi-automatic models. More details on C-Pack.

Warranty, pre-assembly, financing, and support

  • 12-month warranty on mechanical parts manufactured by Albion. It does not cover consumables or damage caused by improper maintenance.
  • Pre-assembly: lines ship pre-assembled from our workshop, ready to position in your plant.
  • Financing: many customers finance their investment through Banco Nación credit lines for domestic industrial machinery. You handle the application with the bank; Albion issues the necessary documentation.
  • Support: after-sales technical support is concentrated in Latin America, but equipment ships anywhere in the world. Albion equipment is operating today in 18 countries across 6 continents.

Behind it is a family company founded in Mendoza, Argentina, on April 20, 1966, by Atilio César Dal Pozzo, now led by the second generation, with the third joining, and more than 50 in-house experts.

Next step

Every packing operation has its own reality. The logical next step is:

  1. Send us your basic data: estimated annual volume, the varieties you handle, packaging formats (bag, net, or tray), and available space.
  2. Get a quote built around your case.
  3. Review financing options with Banco Nación credit lines, if applicable.

Frequently asked questions

What is the capacity of the PC 4000 line, and what kind of plant is it designed for?
The PC 4000 processes 4,000 kg/h in a single continuous pass. That capacity is designed for regional packers and mid-size cooperatives selling fresh potatoes to retail, whether in bags, nets, or trays.
Does it work with sensitive potato varieties?
Yes. The brusher has adjustable-pressure brushes, compatible with sensitive varieties such as Spunta, Kennebec, Innovator, and similar. That way it removes adhered soil and leaves the uniform finish expected on the shelf.
At what point in the process are defective potatoes removed?
On the inspection conveyor, where operators pull out green, split, or mechanically damaged potatoes before investing in sizing. Then the sizer splits the flow into 3 size grades plus 1 reject fraction.
Can I add net packaging or multi-head weighing to the line?
The PC 4000 has continuous flow and a sanitary design, and it is offered integrated with Newtec weighers. For that stage, in Argentina Albion represents Newtec (Denmark), which specializes in multi-head weighers for high-speed weight-based bagging, and C-Pack (Germany), which manufactures net-packaging machines. These are brands Albion distributes, not equipment Albion manufactures.
What support do I get after the purchase?
The line comes with a 12-month warranty on mechanical parts manufactured by Albion; it does not cover consumables or damage caused by improper maintenance. After-sales technical support is concentrated in Latin America, but equipment ships anywhere in the world: Albion equipment is operating today in 18 countries across 6 continents.
Are financing options available?
Many customers finance their investment through Banco Nación credit lines for domestic industrial machinery. You handle the application with the bank; Albion issues the necessary documentation. Check your specific case when you request a quote.
